Becoming my parent's parent

Shared anonymously·August 25, 2026

What happened

My father was diagnosed with early Alzheimer's. Suddenly I was scheduling his medications, managing his money, and translating his confusion.

What I wish I knew

You cannot be the only person in this. Ask for help earlier than feels comfortable.

What helped me

A caregiver support group. Even fifteen minutes a week of being heard by people in the same situation changed something.

What I would tell someone going through this now

This is one of the hardest things a person can do. You are allowed to be tired.

A quiet reply

Have you been here too?

Your response tells someone they aren't alone. It isn't a like.

Someone else's experience just met you where you are.
